SAN FRANCISCO, June 2 — Solve this brainteaser and it could mean you are smart enough to work for top companies like Google and Goldman Sachs.
According to Mail Online, these two giants reportedly use a pair of riddles during their job interviews to test applicants’ lateral thinking.
The more popular one is often referred to as the ‘100 hats’ riddle, and it goes something like this:
One hundred prisoners are lined up by an executioner, who places a red or blue hat on each of their heads.
The prisoners can see the hats of the people lined up in front of them, but they cannot look at the hats behind them, or at their own.
Starting at the back of the line, the executioner asks the last prisoner to state the colour of his hat.
The prisoner must answer correctly in order to live.
If he gets it wrong, he is killed ‘instantly and silently.’
This means that the other prisoners will hear the answer, but will not know whether or not it was correct.
The night before the line-up, the prisoners can meet to discuss a strategy to help them survive.
The answers to these riddles are based upon coordinated strategy, and researchers report that Google’s deep neural network has also been put through tests to determine the fates of these hypothetical prisoners, Mail Online added.
