NEW YORK, March 14 — There has been some rather odd musical instruments over the years, including the theremin, a musical instrument that is played without actual physical contact.
Swedish musician Martin Molin, who is part of a folktronica band named Wintergatan, on the other hand, took it to the other extreme by inventing a musical instrument that uses marbles called the ‘Wintergatan Marble Machine’.
The massive hand-cranked music box features a vibraphone, bass, kick drum, cymbal and other instruments powered by a circuit of 2,000 cascading steel marbles.
The machine plays a score programmed into a 32-bar loop, and the marbles are channelled through the machine using tracks, pulleys and funnels, and tubes.
According to Wired UK, Molin began work on the marble machine in August 2014, an endeavour that would take him 14 months to complete as the complex machine required 3,000 internal parts, which were specially designed and handmade.
The video of Molin playing the instrument has gone viral, netting over 13 million views since it was posted on March 1.
