GEORGE TOWN, Feb 3 — A team of researchers from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), have managed to invent a cream which expedites the healing of wounds, using natural ingredients.

Head of Research Prof Dr Amin Malik Shah Abdul Majid said the cream named ‘Mu-Derm’ is made from the mucus extract of the snakehead fish (ikan haruan), beeswax and virgin coconut. It can accelerate the healing of wounds on the human body faster than existing creams.

“The Mu-Derm cream heals wounds quickly. The healing process is 50 percent faster compared with existing creams and the product has no artificial preservatives.

“The ‘Haruan’ fish mucus extract contained in Mu-Derm can promote angiogenesis – a natural process in the human body to heal wounds by developing new blood vessels,” he told reporters here today.

Local companies have come forward expressing interest in marketing the Mu-Derm cream, he added.

Dr Amin said the Mu-Derm cream also clinched a gold medal at the recent International Conference and Exposition on Inventions by Institutions of Higher Learning in 2015 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Dec 4 to 6, last year. — Bernama
