MAPUTO (Mozambique), Sept 13 — Fancy a fun project that involves looking at photos of wild animals? Why not spare some time away from cat videos for the WildCam Gorongosa project? It's a project to help track the recovery of wildlife in the Gorongosa Wildlife Park in Mozambique.
All you need to do is head to the website and look through thousands of photos taken of the animals, to help identify the various species. Helping them out means freeing up scientists from having to spend hours looking at the photos instead of working on other things.
Why not computers? Well the problem with that is that computers can’t analyse the data that easily as yet. They still need people to identify that the object in the corner is a monkey and not elephant turd.
Competitive? You can even keep track of how many photos you have helped identify. You know, for bragging rights.
The site helps you figure out what animal you spotted with a helpful list on the righthand side. — Gorongosa screencap
