NEW YORK, Nov 27 — A spoon equipped with sensors capable of detecting tremors in the hand has been released by Lift Labs, which was a start-up funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) before being acquired by Google in September.
Called Liftware, once its sensors detect the user’s tremors, the spoon responds by neutralising their effect, for the lower half moves independently of the upper.
According to Lift Labs, the algorithm-loaded spoon is capable of canceling 70 per cent of tremors, making it possible for those suffering diseases such as Parkinsons to keep their food on the spoon while eating.
It’s rechargeable, compact and portable, making it easy to bring to restaurants and to dinner parties.
The Liftware spoon (US$295/RM987) detaches from the lower body, making it possible to change between a fork and soupspoon attachment, which can be purchased for US$19.95 each.
According to the Lift Labs website, a key attachment is in the works. — AFP-Relaxnews
