GEORGE TOWN, June 14 — Jawi House’s popular Talam Peranakan is back this Ramadan but with a twist this year as the tray of yummy rice and side dishes now comes with your choice of kerabu.
The Talam Peranakan — a whole tray of three types of rice and dishes — is Jawi House’s Ramadan Special.
You can also choose an additional serving of rice, the nasi ulam.
The restaurant offers up three refreshing varieties of sweet, sour and spicy kerabu to go with the talam (tray) or any other main dish from Thursday to Sunday.

The types of kerabu available are bean sprouts with crispy shrimps and toasted rice, grated coconut with bunga kantan and shrimps, daun selom with spicy coconut and anchovies and jackfruit and wingbean.
Jawi House chef and co-owner Nurilkarim Razha said the types of kerabu available depends on the availability of the ingredients but every weekend, there will be three types of kerabu to choose from.
The Talam Peranakan comes with three types of rice and this year, customers get to choose from lemuni rice, lentil rice, briyani rice, pandan rice, nasi ulam, and nasi dagang.
The rice is served with crispy salted fish, anchovies, sambal, salted duck egg, ulam and two different types of kuih.
They also have a list of chicken, beef and fish main dishes to choose from to pair with the rice such as roast chicken, chicken curry, beef rendang, fish curry and fish sambal. Each set will come with two main dishes and also two glasses of iced syrup with sago. The Talam Peranakan is a sharing dish enough for two to three people.

This year, Jawi House is also helping with a Ramadan cake and pastry sale in aid of orphanages. There is now a cake, pastry and kuih stall at the entrance to the restaurant that is open between 12pm and 6pm from now until June 19.
Each day, several types of homemade kuih, cakes and cookies are sold to raise funds for two orphanages. The cake and pastry sale is organised by the Penang Jawi Peranakan Heritage Society and supported by Jawi House.

The society president Datuk Dr Wazir Jahan Karim said each year, during Ramadan, they will organise a fund raising event in aid of orphans.
“Every year, we will organise fund raising events for Nasyiatul Aisyah Orphanage in Balik Pulau and this year we are including another orphanage, Rumah Kesayangan in Bukit Jambul,” she said.
Each day, two society members will donate cakes, pastries and kuih for the 10-day pastry and cake sale at Jawi House to raise funds for the orphanages.
“The funds raised from the sale of these pastries and kuih will be donated in part to the orphanages and in part given to the children as duit raya and Jawi House is sponsoring the Iftar for the children on June 19,” she said.
