TOKYO, March 17 — It’s no exaggeration to say that every week we get food news out of Japan that makes us do a double take, or in some cases, even convince ourselves that it must be a hoax.
This week, we bring you two such snacks that our research assures us is real.
First up is potato chip-flavoured soda.
The novelty drink is a project between Japanese video game publisher Namco and soda company Kimura Drink.
It is only available as a prize in Namco crane games at arcades and amusement parks throughout Japan for a limited time.
A few months ago, Namco teamed up with Japanese snack-maker Calbee to create cola-flavoured potato chips, which were also only available as arcade prizes.
According to Mental Floss, Kimura Drink has a reputation for coming up with a non-traditional soft drinks.
Past offerings have included tomato, sweet potato, wasabi, and eel-flavoured beverages.
The second head-scratching snack is fried chicken ice cream.
It will be served by a vendor at next month’s Karaage Festival in the Japanese city of Fukuoka, on the southern island of Kyushu.
Karaage is basically Japanese-style fried chicken, and according the the festival website, the karaage ice cream hopes to to be the perfect end to the meal.
As seen in the poster above, the soft serve has a golden brown hue, just like the fried chicken breading, but what it tastes like, no one knows.
It throws down a challenge to all fearless eaters though: “Karaage soft serve ice cream!? You’ve got to take on this challenge!”
But the real question is: Do you dare?
