MADRID, April 9 — Whisky maker The Macallan has teamed up with the Spanish restaurant that currently holds the title of best in the world, El Celler de Can Roca, to host a series of exclusive dinners that will be inspired by the flavours and aromas of the Scottish whisky, at US$10,000 (RM32,300) a pop.
That’s right, US$10,000 a head.
It’s a multi-pronged collaboration that taps into the Scottish whisky maker’s connection with Spain and one of the hottest dining addresses in the world today: the Girona restaurant has an 11-month waiting list.
Macallan single malt Scotch whiskies, meanwhile, are matured in Spanish oak sherry-seasoned casks.
The 14-course menu will be developed specially for the six charity dinners, with dishes inspired by the flavor and aromas of The Macallan.
Foods will also be paired with 14 of the distiller’s most expensive and exclusive collections, including whiskies from unreleased single cask malts to M, which fetched US$628,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong earlier this year to set a new record as the world’s most expensive whisky.
Guests will also sip on The Macallan Lalique 62 years, the oldest single malt ever released by the distillery.
In true El Celler de Can Roca style, a preview video hints at a meal that will evoke all the senses: “seeing, touching, smelling, hearing, tasting.”
The dinner will take place at the El Celler de Can Roca restaurant in Girona on six dates in June and July this summer.
Though details are scarce on the number of places available, seats are “open to a limited number of people.”
The trio of Roca brothers, Joan, Josep and Jordi, who make up the El Celler de Can Roca team have been capitalizing on their monumental win at the influential World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards in 2013, when they knocked Danish restaurant Noma off its perch.
Last year, the brothers announced plans to embark on a “Roca and Roll World Tour 2014,” a series of pop-up events that will hit Mexico, Colombia and Peru this year.
Meanwhile, The Macallan/Roca dinner isn’t the first whisky and chef collaboration of its kind. The Dalmore tapped chef Daniel Boulud last year to help create a bespoke single malt scotch whisky that was likewise paired with a specially designed menu at his New York restaurants.
