LONDON, Sept 14 — You could call it the American invasion. After popular US burger chains Shake Shack and Five Guys opened in London this year to much fanfare, Dunkin’ Donuts has become the latest fast food brand to leave a distinctly American stamp on the British capital.

Over the next five years, Londoners will see the development of 50 Dunkin’ Donuts shops open in the Greater London area, the company announced this week. The chain also has its sights set on developing 150 more outlets across the UK over the same period.

Dunkin’ Donuts’ entry into the British market will put the squeeze on Starbucks and domestic brand Costa Coffee, the largest and fastest growing coffee shop chain in the UK.

This summer, the opening of a Shake Shack in London had the same effect of Shake Shack openings in the US, producing long lines and a cult-like following among New York-loving Brits, expats and the foodie community.

The flagship restaurant is located in New York’s Madison Square Park.
