KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 – For those familiar with Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (Jalan Ipoh)’s Keng Nam Hai coffeeshop, you would have tried the delicious fried Hokkien prawn mee.
A friend alerted me that the stall had closed when she visited mid-April. She is a big fan of the fried Hokkien Mee so it was a big blow to her.
Through a collaborative effort, we both found where they were. Firstly, she managed to get the information that they had relocated and opened a new business last week.
With just a business card saying Foursea Noodles, I tried googling it but nothing turned up. I decided to Waze to the address that led me to a residential home! Eventually I managed to contact the eatery and found the place using their location pin.
On their Facebook page, they are known as HYT Eatery but the signboard in Malay says "Restoran Hidangan Mi HYT”.
As I am not familiar with the area, a couple of landmarks I spotted were Moon Tong One-Stop Bridal Services which is right above the eatery. Across the road, there’s Hong Kee Bak Kut Teh. If you’re coming from their original location at Jalan Ipoh’s Keng Nam Hai, it’s actually rather nearby.
From what I understand, the owner cum chef, Hor Kai Quan is from Johor. Previously he was at the coffee shop for three years but recently, he decided to open his own place. With the new place that has a kitchen rather than just a small stall, there is more freedom to offer new dishes.
The new place also offers a better dining experience since it’s air-conditioned.
The menu offers a selection of noodles, where it’s divided into two types namely fried and those served with gravy or soup. There’s also porridge and snacks.
I only managed to try two items but both were excellent.
Previously, his Fried Prawn Mee only came in one size. Now you can upgrade it to bigger portions that can be shared. In fact, I saw a group of three happily sharing either a medium or big portion of the prawn mee.
His prawn mee is just as good as I remembered. I was happily slurping up the flavourful yellow noodles with that delicious gravy studded with lard fritters. You get four prawns, bouncy squid and that sambal on the side.
I always think I’ll just have a half portion of the noodles but it’s just so delicious, I ended up scraping every bit of the noodles.
The small portion that generously feeds one person is RM13.80, while the medium size is RM19.80 and the big size is RM23.80. The medium size is good for two persons while the big size can feed more than three.
There’s so many things I want to try on the menu. I spied a crispy vermicelli from their Facebook page, which is also one of their signatures.
My friend told me, the other recommended dish is Wat Tan Hor. I saw another table sharing a huge plate of this that looked really good with a crispy meehoon on the bottom topped with smooth kway teow noodles.
The menu also has Lam Mee, something we don’t usually get in most eateries and even a Ginger Wine Mee Sua Soup served with either a choice of fish or pork. There’s even Sliced Fish Soup.
For the porridge, you have five different types of toppings. Select from fish, three eggs, pork, shredded chicken or the classic pairing of pork with century egg.
Since I had a little more stomach space, I went for the crowd favourite Shrimp Paste Chicken. Every table had a plate of this to snack on.
The chicken is coated with a crispy, light batter that makes each wing, finger licking good. There’s just a light taste of the shrimp paste but just eating that crispy exterior made me happy.
What I also liked was how the chicken wings weren’t dripping in oil despite being deep fried.
The small portion is six pieces for RM15. You can also get the big portion for RM30 which is 14 pieces.
Other recommended snacks are the Nam Yu Pork Belly and the unusual Crispy PiPa Tofu. There’s also Salad Prawn, a dish often found at Chinese restaurants as an appetiser or served at a banquet.
Parking can be limited around here. Just in front of the eatery, it’s one lane with side parking.
I found an empty parking lot as they had torn down a corner shoplot. If you’re coming from Jalan Kuching and you turn into Jalan Ipoh from there, just go straight until you hit a traffic lights where there is a mosque on the right hand side.
Go straight and turn left at the first traffic lights. The parking lot is on the left hand side. You can walk further down Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and the eatery is on the left hand side.
For those taking the MRT, the nearest station is Batu Kentonmen.
The eatery will be open on the public holidays that fall on May 1 and 4.
