KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 — Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia scored another first in the market by becoming the first to introduce an aluminium engine in a pick-up truck. The new 2.4 litre turbo-charged diesel engine replaces the 2.5 litre turbo-diesel in this 5th generation Triton that was introduced in 2015. At that time, the Triton was already a step ahead with a wide array of car-like features, namely, a push-start button, Keyless operation, Auto Bi-Xenon HID headlamps, tilt and telescopic steering and paddle shifters.

This 5th generation Triton retains its array of features more commonly found in cars.

The first generation Triton was first introduced in 2008, and this 5th generation is probably the last update before a replacement model.

The new aluminium engine, despite being of lower cubic capacity delivers 181 PS and 430Nm of torque, thanks to a variable geometry turbocharger and variable valve timing, while the change of the cylinder block material from cast iron has reduced the engine weight by 30 kilograms. According to Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, the new engine package offers a 15 per cent improvement in fuel economy.

The Tritons are offered with wheels in 15-inch, 16-inch and 17-inch variants.

The Triton is available in six variants. The lowest variant (Triton Quest) starts with a very competitive pricing of RM73,438, and this variant is still equipped with the old 2.5 litre de-tuned engine with an output of 110PS and equipped with 15-inch wheels. Next up is the Triton MT, offered with 4 X 4 and equipped with 16-inch wheels, the old 2.5 litre engine, turbo-charged and intercooled, delivering 136 PS, at also a competitive price of RM88,997.

The next four higher variants get the new aluminium engine, and the prices range from RM102,619.00 to RM125,005.00 depending on whether you want it with a manual transmission, automatic transmission, or with higher interior specifications. The top two ‘Adventure’ variants get 17-inch wheels. The Manual VGT variant comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. All the automatic transmissions are five-speed.
