Selangor doles out RM1.5m aid to flood victims

SHAH ALAM, Dec 26 ― The Selangor government has approved approximately RM1.5 million to aid those affected by the flood crisis in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Perak, state Mentri Besar Azmin Ali announced today.

Azmin said the decision was made during this morning's special state executive council meeting on the matter.

The mentri besar also said it was agreed that he and two other state excos ― Amiruddin Shari and Dr Daroyah Alwi ― will head to Kelantan today to lend their assistance.

“My flight (to Kelantan) is at 10.55am this morning,” he told reporters at a news conference here.

RM1 million has been approved to assist the Kelantan government in aid relief, while RM100,000 will be channelled to the three other states- Terengganu, Pahang and Perak.

An additional RM200,000 will doled out as part of the state's humanitarian aid department under Selangor exco Daroyah.

The Selangor government will also get financial support from state subsidiaries, government-linked companies (GLCs) and private companies in Selangor to assist in preparing schooling equipments including school bags and unifoms for students in primary and secondary schools,” Azmin added.

He said that Selangor has cancelled its “Temasya Selangor 15” new year celebrations as a sign of respect towards victims affected by the flood crisis.

Tens of thousands in Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis and Pahang have had to be evacuated from their homes due to floods in various districts, Bernama reported yesterday at noon.

In Kelantan, 20,709 victims from 6,795 families in eight districts were evacuated compared to 20,468 people Tuesday morning, while the number of flood relief centres increased to 84 from 70.

According to an update on Bernama this morning, the number of flood evacuees in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Perak is now t 103,649.

Although the total has dropped marginally, Pahang’s numbers rose dramatically overnight from 28,578 last night to 35,736 this morning.
