OLATHE, Jan 23 — The company known for its satnav systems has launched a range of new golf handsets that can help you with everything from finding the green to adjusting your swing.
The Approach G7 and the Approach G8 colour-screen devices are sufficiently water resistant to survive a downpour and come preloaded with 30,000 international courses as well as the promise that their batteries are good enough to go a whole weekend's golfing (15 hours) without a recharge.
Aimed as much at the avid golfer as the technophile who likes to absentmindedly swing a club once in a while, the devices can give the precise distance to the front, back and centre of the green, as well as layup and dogleg distances and, thanks to the Playslike Distance feature, will help golfers of all levels factor things like up- or downhill gradient into their swing.
They can also keep track of how users hit their clubs to make future selections simpler and of course will help keep track of scoring, automatically factoring in things like handicaps for up to four players at a time.
No device aimed at a sporting activity would be complete without some sort of social media feature, and the Approach handsets are no different. Scores can be shared and printed so you'll always know how often you've beaten or lost to an opponent, as will everyone in your virtual social circle.
The Approach 8 also features built in wi-fi so that it can automatically update course information whenever an internet connection is available and will offer a pinpoint marking of the green, even when it can't be seen, for optimum placing of a tee.
But maybe the best feature is the smart notification system that allows the devices to sync with a phone and push notifications, such as missed calls, to the screen. Not everyone likes to be disturbed by a ringing smartphone while on the back nine, and with the exception of a handful of Sony and Samsung phones, smartphones as a rule are neither water or sand resistant.
The Approach G7 and G8 will launch in the US in Q1 2014. The Approach G7 will retail for US$299.99 (about RM1000) and the Approach G8 will retail for US$399.99 and will be available at specialty golf retailers, golf course pro-shops or directly from Garmin's US website. — AFP-Relaxnews
