KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 — France’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Frédéric Laplanche, congratulated Malaysians on the result of the 14th general election using the Malay language.

In a video posted on the French Embassy’s Facebook page, Laplanche also congratulated Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on his appointment as prime minister.

“We are happy to witness this democratic process that was executed smoothly and peacefully.

“The release and pardon of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is also an achievement for human rights and a source of happiness,” he said.

Laplanche made several attempts at the congratulatory speech and the video includes bloopers of his less successful tries.

Laplanche was appointed France’s ambassador here in June 2017.

Dr Mahathir led Pakatan Harapan to defeat Barisan Nasional in GE14 on May 9.
