KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 — Defeated Umno can be returned to glory under the leadership of Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, according to Watan, a Malay language news portal.
In an opinion piece penned by Lukman Abdullah and Haspaizi Mohd Zain published today, Watan noted that the senior ranking grassroots members of Umno have been visiting the Kelantan prince near daily seeking his advice and leadership since the Malay nationalist party’s fall from grace after the May 9 general election.
The article said Razaleigh is the only Umno leader with credibility to galvanise the party members into action now.
“Tengku Razaleigh, better known as Ku Li, is a former Umno vice-president and most suitable to lead Umno, on par to take on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Apart from holding an excellent record when he was finance minister, Ku Li is also seen as having no personal agenda if he leads Umno,” Watan said.
According to Watan, the biggest difference between Dr Mahathir and Razaleigh was that the latter did not have a hidden agenda to ensure a family legacy in the country’s political landscape.
The news portal said the former Gua Musang MP has the experience necessary to counter Dr Mahathir’s power, citing Razaleigh’s breakaway from Umno to found Semangat 46 in the late 1980s to fight the latter who was PM then.
Watan said Razaleigh’s distinct “aura” is proof he has what it takes to lead Umno against Dr Mahathir.
