GEORGE TOWN, May 16 — Penang police uncovered a drug processing lab and seized RM732,952 worth of heroin and syabu in a series of raids in Bandar Baru Ayer Itam on Monday.

State police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said in the first raid, a 42-year-old man was detained at an apartment in Bandar Baru Ayer Itam and heroin weighing 14.5kg was seized.

“The suspect then led the police to a house in the same area, at which 17 packets of heroin weighing 8.4kg and six packets of syabu weighing 3.1kg were found.

“In another raid on a house in Lengkok Angsana at 11.15pm, police uncovered a drug processing lab and arrested a 52-year-old man.

“Various item were seized from the house, including three slabs of heroin base, a bag filled with 20 packets of newspaper-wrapped heroin, nine packets of caffeine powder and heroin processing paraphernalia,” he told a press conference at the Penang police contingent headquarters here today.

Other items seized included RM37,000 in cash, RM42,900 in savings and a car estimated to be worth RM25,000.

The two men, both locals, have been remanded until May 21 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama
