MELAKA, May 16 — A baby boy believed to be between one and three days old was found abandoned at the entrance of the Ar-Rahman Mosque in Parit Gantung Sungai Rambai, Jasin near here, early today.

Jasin District Police chief DSP Arshad Abu said the baby, who was wrapped in a cloth and placed in a box with a bottle and a packet of milk, was found by a female mosque-goer at about 5.45am.

“A police report was lodged at the Sungai Rambai Police Station by the bilal (mosque official), Salehan Omar and his wife, Rosnah Budin, after cleaning the baby at their home.

“Initial investigation found that the baby’s umbilical cord was cut, and the complainant had also taken the baby to the Sungai Rambai Health Clinic for further treatment at about 7.30am,” he told reporters in a statement.

He said the baby would be referred to the Melaka Hospital for further investigation and subsequent procedures, adding that the Social Welfare Department had also been informed.

Arshad also urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. — Bernama
