BERLIN, April 17 ― The bionic flying fox from German technology firm Festo mimics much of the real mammal's aerial ability.

Just like the real thing, an airtight membrane stretches from fingertips to feet.

A large motor flaps the wings, while smaller motors in the body adjust each wing separately, giving it greater airborne agility.

While it needs a human operator to take off and land, it's semi-autonomous in-flight.

Machine-learning algorithms decode data from external cameras and on-board sensors to accurately plan its flight path.

While not commercially available, it was built to demonstrate new engineering techniques.

It will be putting on aerial displays at April's Hannover Messe industrial trade fair. ― Reuters
