SAN FRANCISCO, April 7 ― The first three games in the 20-year-old action adventure series Spyro will be landing in remastered form on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September, confirming several months' worth of rumour.
A regional store listing for Spyro Reignited Trilogy may have prompted video game publisher Activision to finally announce the remaster collection ― or vice versa.
After Amazon Mexico posted a product listing for Spyro Reignited, Activision revealed that the compilation would be coming to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Contained within will be Spyro the Dragon (1998,) Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999) and Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000).
(The year 2000 was in fact Chinese Year of the Dragon.)
Upon its Sony PlayStation debut, Spyro became a critical and commercial success, representing a significant advance in 3D action adventures and building upon the progress made by Nintendo's Super Mario 64 two years earlier and then PlayStation's Crash Bandicoot mere months after the iconic Mario game.
It was Insomniac Games, currently occupied with September PlayStation exclusive Marvel's Spider-Man, that created and developed the Spyro franchise before it was passed on to a succession of other studios.
Current publisher Activision resurrected it as a playground for 2011 figurine collection toy-game hybrid Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, with a new game and toy line released annually over a five-year period.
Since the Skylanders introduction, there have been calls from fans for a return to the classic Spyro approach, and now it seems they are getting what they want.
In fact, it's Skylanders developer Toys For Bob that has been remaking the Spyro trilogy for PS4 and XBO.
The studio had earlier assisted another Activision developer, Vicarious Visions, with another '90s PlayStation trilogy remaster ― the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy ― providing the Nintendo Switch version which launches alongside Xbox One and Windows PC editions in July 2018; the PlayStation 4 game debuted July 2017. ― AFP-Relaxnews
