Johor Sultan tells mayors, council presidents to be apolitical

JOHOR BARU, Feb 26 — The Sultan of Johor said mayors and local council presidents must avoid political affiliations ahead of the general election, reminding them that civil servants are oath-bound to be neutral.

Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said that as the state’s administrators, their fundamental duty and responsibilities were to drive development in their respective cities, municipalities or district councils.

“Do not forget that you are all civil servants. You must focus on effective administration and enforcement.

“Don’t get involved in politics,” he said in a post on his official Facebook page after a meeting with the state’s local authority heads at Istana Pasir Pelangi here today.

Sultan Ibrahim said the local authority heads were additionally obliged to solve social problems in their respective jurisdictions.

“I expect nothing less than full commitment and dedication in the discharge of your duties and responsibilities, without fear or favour of any parties.

“It is also your job to clean and beautify your towns with good town planning and landscaping. Put the interests of the rakyat first with effective services and facilities,” he stressed.

The state ruler also ordered those present to submit their plans for the cleanliness and beautification of their towns for his personal scrutiny and perusal.

His message was in both English and Bahasa Malaysia and was uploaded at about 3pm today.

Sultan Ibrahim is known as a state ruler with a hands-on approach in matters concerning Johor’s planning and development.

He regularly gives his ideas and inputs to state administrators on upcoming and current development projects earning him praise from Johor natives.
