Tan sets new national marathon record in Tokyo

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 — National marathon runner Tan Huong Leong set a new national record at the Tokyo Marathon run in Japan, today.

His time of two hours 25 minutes 32 seconds in the 40km event bettered the previous record of 2:28:19 set by himself last year.

National athletics head coach Zainal Abbas who confirmed the matter said another national representative Muhaizar Mohamad also clocked in with his best personal record, at 2:27:25.

“Congratulations to Tan. He lives in Taiwan and practices himself there. We at MAF (Malaysian Athletics Federation) monitor every marathon he participates in.

“For example last year, MAF helped in terms of sponsoring his participation fees for all races he participated in, for the preparation for the SEA Games,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

However, Tan’s time still falls short of the qualification criteria for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia and the Asian Games in Indonesia this year. — Bernama
