PETALING JAYA, Feb 15 — Philippines and Taiwan are tipped as up-and-coming travel destinations for Malaysians this year according to vacation rental site HomeAway.

The HomeAway Asia 2018 Trend Report revealed a significantly increased demand for holiday homes in Cebu and Taichung as well as Fukuoka in Japan among locals travelling in groups or as a family.

“Malaysian travellers are increasingly choosing holiday homes because they usually travel in groups with family or friends, and there just isn’t a better fit when it comes to group travel,” said HomeAway Asia marketing head Jude Davidson.

“You can replicate the warm and cozy atmosphere you get at home, everywhere you go,” she added, referring to an affordable price.

Homes available in Cebu saw the biggest climb in demand, with a 110 percent increase in searches from Malaysian users. The island, with its famed white-sandy beaches, pulls two million foreign travellers a year.

Locations off the beaten track, Taichung and Fukuoka offer quieter scenic alternatives compared to likes of popular cities in Taiwan and Japan such as Taipei and Tokyo.

The report stated that the top three destinations among Malaysians for 2017 was Singapore, Taipei and Osaka.

In addition to journeying to uncommon holiday spots, Malaysians are also exploring unique accommodations.

The hottest “alternative” stays besides usual homes saw pertinent rise in cabins, villas and even treehouses last year.

Villas, popular among destinations such as Bali, saw a 50 percent increase in demand. Luxury cabins, nestled within various woodlands of Asian holiday spots, saw an 80 percent elevation.

Malaysians also searched for treehouses 59 percent more than previous years.

Key features in searches highlighted by the HomeAway report finds Malaysians search for property that is value-for-money, pet-friendly and comes with a kitchen.
