KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 15 — Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has extended Chinese New Year greetings to everyone in the spirit of being fellow Malaysians, today.
“I would like to wish not only the Chinese but all Malaysians a very happy Chinese New Year and may we celebrate this occasion in the spirit of fellow Malaysians,” he said in his latest posting at sskeruak.blogspot.my blog.
He said the understanding between all races was the foundation of Malaysia’s independence thus, the Chinese community has a stake in the country as much as the Malays do and over the time celebrations such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali became Malaysian celebrations.
“When Umno negotiated Merdeka with the British in the 1950s, one of the terms laid down by the British before any talks could be held was that the Chinese and Indians must be involved in the talks.
“That was when the Alliance Party of Umno, MCA and MIC was formed in 1952,” he said.
Salleh added that the Merdeka negotiations was not easy and many compromises and concessions had to be made by all parties, eventually an agreement was reached and in August 1957 Merdeka was declared. — Bernama
