PETALING JAYA, Feb 13 — Operations at the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) office here has been temporarily suspended until the Fire Department completes its investigation following a fire incident which occurred earlier today.

EPF deputy chief executive officer (operations) Datuk Mohd Naim Daruwish said contributors could still obtain similar services at any other EPF branches nearby.

“For now, we have to temporarily shut down operations pending further instructions from the Fire Department due to safety factors,” he told reporters at the scene today.

He also gave the assurance that the crediting of dividends in customers’ accounts would not be affected by the incident.

“Contributors and employers do not have to worry  as their data is protected and backed up,” he said.

Earlier, Fire and Rescue Department deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Soiman Jahid said the fire was believed to have been caused by sparks during maintenance works carried out on the first floor of the building.

Soiman said the building was found to have used inflammable polyfoam as cladding.

A total of 527 workers who were present in the building when the incident occurred were evacuated to safety.

“Firefighters received an emergency call at 11.52am, and arrived at the scene seven minutes later. The firefighting operation took about 30 minutes,” said Soiman. — Bernama
