LOS ANGELES, Feb 9 — Joaquin Phoenix has been revealed to be director Todd Phillips’ first choice for the role of The Joker in the Clown Prince of Crime’s origin film.
It was previously reported that Warner Bros wanted Leonardo DiCaprio for the role in the Martin Scorsese-produced flick.
While studio negotiations haven’t started yet, according to Variety, Phoenix was approached by Phillips late last year and early talks have already begun.
This wouldn’t be Phoenix’s first foray into the DC film universe.
He was considered for the role of Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The as-yet unnamed Joker Origins film is set to be co-written and directed by Phillips.
It is meant to launch DC Comics’ new banner that brings different story angles to its cinematic universe.
The film will reportedly be set in the 1980s and sport a gritty tone in its exploration of the Joker’s rise to infamy.
The Joker was most recently played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad.
Confusingly, it has been reported that he will likely reprise the role in Suicide Squad 2 and the Joker-Harley Quinn movie that is currently in development.
