National women's squad starts on right footing

ALOR SETAR, Feb 6 — The national women’s badminton squad started excellently by winning 4-1 in its first action against Vietnam in the 2018 Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC) today.

Soniia Cheah surprised experienced player Vu Thi Trang 21-15, 21-17 for the nation’s first point at the competition which took place at the Sultan Abdul Halim Suka Menanti Stadium here.

Goh Jin Wei, who was fielded as the second singles player, gave the second point after cowing Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-11, 21-15 while S. Kisona further firmed up the position of the national women’s squad with the third point after beating Dinh Thi Phuong Hong 21-17, 21-18.

The combination of Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei, however, had to give a free win to Vietnam after Khe Wei had a knee injury when tied 10-10 in the first set.

Chow Mei Kuan, who had just partnered Goh Yea Ching did not face any problem in completing the national squad’s triumph after beating Dinh Thi Phuong Hong-Do Thi Hoai 21-7, 21-18.

Malaysia will face the squad from the Philippines at the second group level match.

Malaysia was voted in Group Y together with Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. — Bernama
