KEPALA BATAS, Jan 27 — The MP for Kepala Batas Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican has proposed that the the Penang government’s undersea tunnel and paired highways project be publicly audited by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Reezal Merican , who is also the Deputy Foreign Minister,  said this would enable the people obtain accurate information on the project following the unhappiness of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over negative reports on the project.

“If there are matters deemed suspicious among the people, as a good chief minister, he should allow the project to be audited by the PAC.

“The people cannot make accusations against him if the matter is handled transparently,” he told a media conference after opening the Joint University-Community Project on Empowering Senior Citizens at Penang Darul Hanan Muslim Senior Citizens Home here, today.

He said this on commenting on Lim being upset by negative reports on the project apart from accusing the Barisan Nasional of trying to sabotage it.

The project encompasses the 10.53 km North Coastal road from Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang, a 5.7km Air Itam-Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway bypass  as well as the 4.075km Persiaran Gurney -Tun Lim Chong  Eu highway bypass.

The project includes the construction of a 7.2km undersea tunnel connecting Persiaran Gurney here to Bagan Ajam in Seberang Perai.

The project is also being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for allegedly involving an extremely high cost of feasibility study and the payment mode involving exchange of state land. — Bernama
