KUALA SELANGOR, Jan 22 — The policies and programmes initiated by the Selangor government are already in line with Islamic principles, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said today amid PAS’s ambition to govern the state.
Azmin said the development and financial management of the state, such as its most recently-launched programme Smart Selangor Mother’s Love (KISS) scheme, reflects integrity.
“We do not need to change the policies and programmes with Islamic labels. What is important is the fair social distribution that has been upheld by the Selangor government.
“And we must avoid being a state that is rich but the people are poor. That is unjust and a tyranny,” he said when meeting reporters at the launch of KISS, here.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had yesterday expressed the Islamist party’s intention to win power in Selangor.
He then pointed out that PAS lawmakers were a part of his administration and have been for nearly a decade.
Azmin added that it would ultimately be up to voters to decide if they want such changes, but expressed confidence that his government’s policies and programmes would be enough to secure continued support.
“PAS is now a part of the Selangor government, correct? Therefore, since 2008, PAS has accepted the policies and programmes that have been implemented by the state as the best model. What else needs to be changed?” he said.
PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang said yesterday that his party aimed to capture Selangor in the general election, and touted an “Islamic leadership” to voters in the state.
Earlier, Azmin, who is also the PKR deputy president, launched the KISS programme that provides eligible mothers in Selangor RM2,400 in annual aid to purchase essential goods.
Recipients will receive a card under the scheme that may be used in place of cash at 500 participating hypermarkets and stores to buy basic items such as rice, cooking oil, or school supplies.
The programme is open to households earning below RM2,000 monthly, with 3,000 applicants so far.
