KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 — Selangor PKR should have proposed Datuk Seri Azmin Ali as Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for prime minister before the pact decided on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad.
The Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) communications director pointed out that Dr Mahathir was the only name considered by the pact as no other recommendations were made by the four components.
“So it’s PKR Selangor’s mistake for not suggesting a name. In the meeting to decide on this, there was a chance for members to nominate anyone besides Dr Mahathir, but each party remained silent,” he was quoted as saying in Utusan Malaysia today.
Following his endorsement at the PH convention earlier this month, Dr Mahathir admitted that Azmin, who is also Selangor mentri besar, would have been a capable candidate for the position.
However, Dr Mahathir said this mattered little as Azmin was not chosen by pact.
Selangor PKR has refused to back Dr Mahathir’s selection.
In the Utusan report today, Khalid urged Selangor PKR to respect the PH leadership’s decision and to stop the infighting that would tarnish the Opposition’s image.
The two-term Shah Alam MP said Dr Mahathir’s was part of the strategy to win Malay votes, especially those of Umno supporters.
Selangor PKR deputy chief Zuraida Kamaruddin previously expressed disappointment over PH announcement to name Dr Mahathir as prime minister, saying it suggested the pact lacked depth among its leaders.
At the PH convention, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was also named as the coalition’s choice for the deputy prime minister’s position.
