NEW YORK, Jan 11 — Two new breeds join the canine pack of the American Kennel Club, which has the largest purebred dog registry in the world.

First up is the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, an ancient European spaniel-type dog, seen in many paintings of the Dutch masters.

The energetic pooches are known for their duck hunting skills, and will be part of the sporting breeds.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, better known as the GBGV is a laid-back rabbit hunter from France that will join the Hound Group.

The breed is known for its relaxed disposition, says Megan Esherick, owner of nine-year-old Juno.

“They definitely are a nice laid back family dog for somebody that’s looking for a dog for a companion,” Owner of Grand Basset Griffon Vandeen ‘Juno’, Megan Esherick, said.

Also in the spotlight was this nearly-hairless cat called “lykoi”, now officially recognized by the International Cat Association.

Ironically the name comes from the cat’s striking resemblance to a certain canine, says the association’s Anthony Hutcherson.

“Lykoi is a play on the term lykan, or werewolf, because this sparse the unique coat that changes has this combination of hairs that stand up and kind of big gold eyes, reminded the first people that saw them that they looked sort of like a werewolf.”

The International Cat Association now has 71 breeds on its pedigree list while the American Kennel Club, with the addition of these fur balls, recognizes 192. — Reuters
