KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — The monsoon season in Malaysia is expected to begin on Monday (Nov 13) until March next year, with heavy rain forecasted for the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
A statement from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) today said four to five episodes of heavy rain are expected during the monsoon season this time.
“Heavy rain is expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor in November and December 2017. In December 2017 and January 2018, the heavy rain is more focused on west Sarawak, north and east Sabah,'’ it said.
During the Northeast Monsoon, continuous rainfall up to three days could cause floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas, it said.
“If the heavy rains fall at the same time as the high tide, the risk of floods occurring is higher,” the department said.
The public is advised to be more prepared to faced the Monsoon season as well as more alert to warnings of heavy rain issued by the Meteorological Department through its website www.met.gov.my, the myCuaca smartphone application, Facebook: malaysiamet, Twitter: @malaysianmet, SMS service 15888 and MMD Hotline at telephone number 1 300 22 1MET (1638). — Bernama
