Organisers hold Ironmankids in attemppt to boost Ironman races

LANGKAWI, Nov 10 ― In an attempt to boost Ironman races and it’s profile, organisers will have an Ironmankids race today for kids aged 4-17, taking part in three distances — 500m, 1km and 1.5km dash along Cenang Beach.

They will share the actual Ironman finishers arch, allowing kids the thrill of experiencing the same finish line as their heroes at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa.

“We love doing community events and always have a charity fund run or Ironkids to get the community more involved,” said Ironman Asia managing director Geoff Meyer.

“In Malaysia we’re doing just runs as swimming elements are difficult as the venue isn’t suitable. We prefer doing it in a big pool where we can monitor the kids,” he said.

“We’ve kept the numbers to 200 and it’s always a hoot. It’s like organised chaos. At the moment this venues a bit difficult to do a swim race but from the clientele we got it’s better to do a straight up race.”

Ironkids kicks off at 8am today and runs for an hour. It should be a lot of fun watching the kids race.

“Take it in, enjoy the atmosphere and have fun because in Ironman a million things can go wrong,” said Meyer.

“Don’t worry about the times on the bike or on the runs. You’ll not enjoy it. My advice would be to put one foot in front of the other and move from there.”

Ironkids is already popular in Europe, Australia and America where the sporting cultures different from Malaysians.

However, this is another avenue for healthy lifestyle and good living that is a win-win situation for all.
