KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 ― It took just four days for the Penang DAP to raise RM6 million from the public to aid residents affected by the torrential storm that flooded the island state last weekend.
Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari said RM5 million has been submitted to the Penang state government’s disaster relief fund.
“As at 10am today, donations exceeded RM6 million. Highest thanks to all the generous people. All money collected will be channelled fully to the state government,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
The state ruling party launched the “Penang Storm and Flood Relief Fund” donation drive on November 5, just a day after continuous heavy rains lashed Penang leaving 80 per cent of its lands on both the island and mainland flooded.
The flood waters have receded in most areas in the state, but residents now have a colossal clean-up on their hands as mud and sludge have dirtied all their belongings.
