MMEA: Area of search for missing anglers, skipper expanded

YAN, Oct 31 — The search and rescue (SAR) operation to look for six anglers and the boat skipper who went missing yesterday in the waters of Pulau Bunting, Yan, has been expanded today.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Kuala Kedah base operations director, Lt (Maritime) Hairil Izhar Nor Azmi said the search area was expanded to 210 sq nautical miles from the location the seven were reported missing.

“Yesterday, we were searching for the victims within 48 sq nautical miles but today, we have expanded the search area to 210 sq nautical miles,” he told reporters when met at the Kuala Sala jetty.

He said the identities of six of the victims were known after their family members came to the operations centre while the identity of another person was not known yet.

The six were identified as the boat skipper, Kharulanuar Arsad, 39, and anglers Mohamad Ramli, 57, Mohd Salihin Ibrahim, 52, Mohamad Nazri Abdul Hamid, 47, Azmi Raif Mohd Noh and Ah Onn (their ages not given). 

Hairil Izhar said the seven people were feared missing after their boat drifted away and a SAR operation was mounted at 9.43am yesterday upon receiving a police report. — Bernama
