KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or a fitness instructor, Malaysian-born app Wanderclass has the right platform for you.

There are two apps available on the Apple App Store or Google Play; one aimed at fitness junkies allowing them to book their fitness classes and another for fitness instructors to help them create and manage their classes.

Wanderclass is founded by husband and wife team Ivan and Angel Tashveer.

The app for booking classes is ideal for those who do not want to be tied down to long-term contracts. The pay-per-use model also encourages you to shop for the best classes to fit your needs.

Let’s say, for example, you want to try hot yoga. You open the app on your phone and with its location-based technology, you will be able to locate the nearest hot yoga class.

Additionally, there will be information on the instructor like reviews and the fee per session. You will also be prompted by the app if you need to bring any fitness apparatus with you.

Feedback for the classes you attend is also encouraged to ensure the service works better for everyone. Aside from yoga, you also have other choices such as martial arts, HIIT (high intensity interval training), dance and much more.

For those who are booking classes via the app, there’s no fee charged for using the service but bear in mind, there will be a fee levied for the classes you book. Currently the classes are only available within the Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya areas.

For the app aimed at fitness instructors, Ivan explains that it will help improve their quality of life. They will get the flexibility to create a class at partner venues according to their convenience.

Zumba classes are also available on the Wanderclass app.

The app also allows them to manage their earnings. Prior to registering with Wanderclass, the instructors must have the requisite instructor qualification as set by Wanderclass’s management.

The instructors can also charge their own fees for their classes provided they are within Wanderclass’s set limit. They will also be charged a fee by Wanderclass for this service.

Wanderclass is an evolution from the Tashveers’ previous set-up which is the first FIR (far infrared) hot yoga centre in Malaysia called LavaBody. Ivan explains that their plan was to introduce not only a yoga studio but their long-term vision was to also start up an academy for yoga instructors.

The idea for Wanderclass was born when one of their investors who is also a mentor challenged Ivan to come up with an out of the box idea. “Wanderclass started as a platform that was motivated by a challenge to break all restrictions (no four walls, no set genre of fitness discipline) and embracing all or as many fitness disciplines as possible.

“We planned to start out by incorporating fitness disciplines that require little to no fitness apparatus to run a class,” said Ivan. Seeing that there is a market for ride-sharing platforms and another fitness platform called KFit, Ivan took it as a challenge so he started Wanderclass to give better opportunities for instructors and fitness enthusiasts.

The app was launched in January this year. In March, Wanderclass’s office and studio Fit Cave opened in Desa Park City. As Angel is a qualified hot yoga instructor, they relocated some of the FIR panels to Fit Cave to hold classes there.

“The Fit Cave can fit about 14 students per class. For instructors who need a venue, they can also use the Fit Cave for anything, be it yoga, dance or any other activity,” said Ivan. The 400 square feet studio has a floor to ceiling mirror. There are also lockers and shower facilities.

Moving forward, Wanderclass is rolling out a third phase in July where they will be introducing corporate packages which complement the existing platforms. When companies subscribe to a package with Wanderclass for their employees, they can turn that platform into a fitness space.

If there is no venue available, they can tap into the current platforms. Also in the pipeline is expansion to other South-east Asian countries with a focus on Malaysia and Singapore. So far, Wanderclass has set up a base in Singapore but it’s still a work in progress.

Currently, Wanderclass is working with boutique fitness centres to list their spaces that will create a higher visibility for them. “We choose to work with boutique gym owners because they are typically run by people who are passionate about what they do themselves.

“There is a sense of personalised service that’s given to the community that they’ve built,” said Ivan. Wanderclass will also assist the owners to build up a community of instructors and fitness enthusiasts.

Ivan adds, “I believe that most boutique fitness centres regardless of their discipline just want to build a community. They want to make themselves visible to people in the area but also give other people who aren’t in the area an opportunity to see what they’re about.

“Moving forward, we believe in the big idea which is the world is your gym, the earth is your mat. To put it simply we want to create the opportunity for people to work out anywhere.

“To make it more relevant, we want people to work out at the convenience of their own space. In the very near future the platform is going to be made able for users to convert their space into a fitness space. We believe that to be a game-changer,” he added.

Prior to starting Wanderclass, Ivan and Angel also kickstarted Cross n Flow, a CSR (corporate social responsibility) project where participants can enjoy the yin and yang of fitness for free.

The donation-based event contributes the funds to Suka Society, a children’s welfare association. The yin, as Ivan explained, are classes like yoga while yang is more like Muay Thai or zumba. Each session lasts for 45 minutes.

It is recommended that you start with a yin session first followed by a yang session. Usually both sessions run concurrently so once the yin group finishes their session, they will do the yang session.

The Cross n Flow series of events has been going on since last September and the couple has organised one almost every month since then.
