IPOH, May 26 — A 41-year-old mother and her 31-year-old friend have been taken into police custody after the woman’s two-year-old daughter allegedly drowned in a pail of water.
It is understood the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after the girl’s mother and her friend had taken the girl, Fatini Aleysha Abdul Karim, for a ride between 8.30pm and 4am.
The male suspect allegedly took the girl to his office, as she needed to use the toilet.
Ipoh police chief ACP Sum Chang Keong said the male took her up to his office while the girl’s mother waited in the car.
“A while later, the male suspect rushed to the car, telling the female suspect her daughter had fallen into a pail and was unconscious.
“Both suspects then took the girl to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun hospital where it was confirmed the two-year-old had died,” he said.
Sum said the post-mortem, conducted at 10.30am on Wednesday, confirmed that Fatini died due to drowning.
He said initial investigations found an element of neglect which led to the girl falling into the pail and subsequently drowning.
Both suspects were arrested on Wednesday and were remanded at the Ipoh magistrate’s court yesterday.
The girl’s mother, a restaurant worker, was remanded for four days while her friend, a car rental worker, was remanded for six days.
