KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — Teachers face unjust expectations from society when performing their roles, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) told Muslims today.

Amid focus on alleged abuse cases at tahfiz schools nationwide, the department added in the sermon prepared for state mosques today that there are often unfair calls to punish educators in matters that could easily be resolved.

It also pointed out that less weight was given to cases where the abuse went in the other direction, saying that teachers were often stripped of dignity simply for fulfilling their responsibilities.

“Rightfully, such issues should be evaluated from the humanity’s standpoint as a whole, and not recklessly putting the entire blame on the teacher. Have we ever heard about students assaulting teachers? How about students applying ‘kung fu moves’ on their teacher?”

“What would be our point of view in cases where the parents attacked a teacher for caning their children, which was only a consequence of their own children’s doing?” it further said.

The sermon does not address any specific case directly. Malaysia also celebrated Teacher’s Day on May 16.

Attention befell local religious schools, hundreds of which are unregistered, owing to a case last month in which 11-year-old Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Ghaddafi lost his legs and died from alleged abuse at one such institution in Johor.

Police in Shah Alam also investigating the alleged abuse of a 13-year-old student at a tahfiz school in Shah Alam, resulting in injuries to the ribs and arms for the boy.
