Technician gets nine years jail for supporting IS

KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — A technician was sentenced to nine years’ jail by the High Court here today after he pleaded guilty to expressing support for IS terrorists.

Justice Datuk Nordin Hassan in meting out the punishment to Mohd Asrol Mohamad, 30, said his act of uploading comments in support of terrorists could have a serious impact and influence on the public.

“Malaysia is a peaceful country, we do not want, your action to lead to chaos. You’re young, your actions can destabilise the government.

“The sentence is not only for you but a lesson to others as well because such comments are dangerous,” the judge said.

Among the comments uploaded by Mohd Asrol were, “paling mustahak bomkan IGP (Ketua Polis Negara) tu” dan “Sayaf, hang cer buat statement gertak IGP supaya dia kenal siapa Islamic State... biar dia takut keluar rumah.

Loosely translated, the comments meant: ‘most importantly the IGP (Inspector-General of Police) must be blown up’ and ‘Sayaf, make a statement to scare the IGP so he knows who the Islamic State is... let him be too frightened to even come out of his house’.

The court ordered the sentence to start from the technician’s arrest on June 29 last year.

Mohd Asrol was charged with expressing support for a terror act involving the use of explosives, via a Telegram chatgroup called ‘amanah vs pas’ using his phone number.

He committed the offence at Perdana Hotel & Suites On The Park, No 10 Jalan Binjai here, between 4.30am and 9.04am, on June 28 last year.

The second child of four siblings, he was charged under Section 130J (1) (b) of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, Mohd Asrol who used the name ‘asrol mohamad’ with a profile photo of an adult male dressed like a baby in the ‘Telegram’ gave nine comments on June 28, last year between 4.27am and 9.04am.

He made the comments to express support for terrorist acts involving the use of explosives.

Police investigations also found the bombing at Movida Boulevard Sdn Bhd in Puchong on June 28, last year at 2am as reported, matched the date of the comments made by Mohd Asrol to express support for the terrorist act.
