SHAH ALAM, March 6 — The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) aims to collect RM700 million tithe this year, compared to RM673.7 million last year.

Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) chairman Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said this was based on increased awareness of paying tithe among Muslims.

"Of RM673.7 million tithe collected last year, RM651.5 million was asset (harta) tithe while RM22.2 million was personal (fitrah) tithe. In 2015, only RM627.2 million tithe was collected," he told a press conference here, today.

Mohamad Adzib said the number of tithe payers in 2016 rose by 4.5 per cent to some 267,431 people compared to 256,001 people in 2015.

"Out of the tithe payers in 2016, some 40,879 people were new."

This year, the LZS aims to distribute RM670 million tithe to eligible groups (asnaf) such as the poor (fakir) and the needy (miskin).

Last year, the LZS distributed RM697.5 million, an increase of 3.2 per cent from RM676 million in 2015.

Some 13,522 poor families and 32,978 needy families or a total of 46,500 families were eligible to receive tithe last year. — Bernama
