KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 — Umno is thankful to Malay voters for keeping the party in power, vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today amid talks of loyalty in the party’s general assembly this week.
The deputy prime minister however claimed that Umno does not fight for the majority Malays alone, but for all of the citizens regardless of race or religion.
“Umno is thankful to the Malays. The reason why Umno exists is because of the Malays. Umno fights for the Malays.
“Even though Umno is because of the Malays, it is important to note that Umno fights for all Malaysians regardless of race and religion,” Ahmad Zahid said during a press conference at the assembly here.
Zahid said this year's general assembly adopts a very different tone with delegates being more loyal to the party leadership and closing their ranks.
“We found that there is a strong message that is about the loyalty to party leadership and the unity within the party ahead of the general elections,” Ahmad Zahid said.
“Even though the war drums are not beaten yet but we need to be prepared,” the Bagan Datoh MP added.
Earlier today, Johor Umno representative Datuk Ayub Rahmat said Umno cannot rest on its laurels if it is to retain the support of the Malay community.
Ayub reminded the party that it only came to be because of the Malays and its achievements were also built on the support of the community.
Johor is the birthplace of Umno. Former Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is now president of the splinter Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, hails from the state.
