KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 ― Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has demanded Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties today to work as hard as Umno to prepare for the general elections due before 2018.
The acting deputy president however was confident that a huge change would happen among the component parties resulting in them being on par as Umno's political machinery.
“I have urged the other component parties to work as hard as Umno. I am confident that they will. Not just in Umno places but in other BN areas also.
“I am confident that there will be a drastic change where they would work as hard as Umno,” he told reporters during a press conference today.
Ahmad Zahid also said instead of blaming each other, the component parties should take care of the respective “DNA” properly so that voters’ support goes to BN.
“We have our own respective party members. We have to take care of the [party] DNA and members. We have to ensure the DNA supports BN, not be the party DNA and support another party.
“We shouldn't be pointing fingers and instead be taking positive action to make sure that all party machineries to work together,” the deputy prime minister said.
The Bagan Datoh MP said he has already ordered for the Umno state liaison chiefs to communicate with other parties in order to streamline their machineries ahead of the next polls.
“We have coordination on party level. We have asked liaison chiefs to synchronise activities with other parties so that we are united,” Ahmad Zahid said.
Umno president and prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced during his speech yesterday that elections were coming up soon.
Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun however told component parties especially ethnic Chinese-majority ones this week to buck up for the elections or face consequences such as denied Cabinet positions.
In return, MCA President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said dwindling minority support is the responsibility of the entire Barisan Nasional BN and not just the component parties.
