KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — MCA’s women wing has slammed a delegate from its counterpart wing in Umno for suggesting that top posts for government-linked companies (GLC) be reserved to only Malays.
According to the wing, the “rhetorical bigotry” of Wanita Umno delegate from Penang, Bagan division wing chief Hamidah Arshad during Umno’s general assembly, would only make it tougher for multiracial Barisan Nasional to win back the state from DAP.
“The government belongs to and represents all Malaysian citizens irrespective of ethnicity and religion. The government is not a private ownership solely of Wanita Umno,” the wing’s publicity bureau chief Ivone Low Yi Wen said in a statement.
“Tax-paying Malaysians of all races, gender and class contribute towards the government’s coffers for allocations towards all ministries, government agencies including GLCs for national development in every budget.”
Low, who also heads the party’s Beliawanis wing, said Hamidah’s suggestion offends GLC employees by insinuating that they were employed because of their race instead of merit.
“Likewise, her espousals relegate the abilities and talents of all professionals be they contractors, consultants and lawyers currently contracted by Malaysian GLCs as inferior,” Low said.
The wing said Hamidah’s race-based proposal would also mean that non-Malay Bumiputera minorities will be omitted from climbing any corporate or government ladder based on merit.
Umno’s women’s wing chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Jalil yesterday pressed Putrajaya to appoint more women to the board of government-owned companies GLCs.
Pasir Putih Wanita chief Zurina Ripin had also urged Putrajaya to allocate 30 per cent of government contracts on food products to Malay women.
