SHAH ALAM, Nov 12 — PAS lawmaker Datuk Mahfuz Omar made a surprise show at the first Pakatan Harapan convention here today, despite his party’s rejection of the invitation.

The Pokok Sena MP said he was attending the convention in his personal capacity, adding that he would participate in the proceedings as he had witnessed the birth of Pakatan Harapan.

“I was invited here as a common man. I am among those were present during the formation of Pakatan Harapan,” he told reporters when met at its sidelines.

PAS had yesterday said it would not attend the convention as it was not a part of Pakatan Harapan and stressed that it would not have anything to do with former Pakatan Rakyat ally, the DAP.

Mahfuz was optimistic that he could help mend the frayed ties between his party and the DAP to forge unity among the disparate Opposition parties.

“I am here for the people to see unity and to create a movement among Opposition parties to drive the people to make a change for Malaysia,” he said.

Mahfuz also said he prepared to face any repercussion from his party for not toeing the party line.

“I am here as a Malaysian. If they want to take disciplinary action, I don't know.. because I didn't make any mistakes.

“In politics you need to be prepared for everything and face it because that is the norm in politics,” he added.

PAS, PKR and the DAP formed the Pakatan Rakyat Opposition pact after the landmark Election 2008, but broke up last year owing to disagreements between DAP and PAS over the Islamist party’s push for hudud in Kelantan.

A faction of PAS leaders broke away to form Parti Amanah Negara, which subsequently joined DAP and PKR to establish Pakatan Harapan.

PAS however, remains friendly with PKR.
