KOTA BARU, June 3 ― PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan confessed today that its total membership had suffered a 20 per cent decline in the past one year.
He said the party now had 800,000 people compared to one million in March 2015.
“I remember at one point we celebrated our one millionth member. But because we cleared some memberships ― some have left the party, some have died ― we have 800,000,” Takiyuddin said during his winding up speech at the PAS muktamar here.
PAS saw an exodus of members who followed ousted party progressives to form an offshoot Parti Amanah Negara last year, following the conservative Islamist party’s quarrel with DAP that subsequently ended their political partnership with secular DAP in the Pakatan Rakyat opposition pact.
Some of their former key leaders, such as Tumpat MP Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar, left PAS to join PKR instead.
PAS maintains cooperation with PKR but even that relationship is currently in review by the Syura Council.
