KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 ― Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed described today the US presidential candidate Donald Trump as the superpower’s equivalent of Malaysia’s Datuk Ibrahim Ali.

He was expressing his surprise that Trump is leading the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

“Donald Trump is the candidate that the Republican party is putting up as their president, and he is like America's Ibrahim Ali,” Nur Jazlan said while launching a new youth fellowship programme by the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) here.

Ibrahim leads Perkasa, a non-government organisation championing Malay issues and has been regularly accused of fanning racial flames due to his vocal views.

“It is surprising that they would prefer someone who is racist and stupid as their presidential candidate,” Nur Jazlan said.

Trump has attracted controversy after a series of remarks throughout his campaign that has targeted Muslims and also migrants in the US.
