KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 — Delicious and wildly creative dishes? Check. Fun and wildly creative bi-monthly themes? Check. Crazy and wildly creative crew? Most definitely check. KL’s most beloved breakfast and brunch pop-up is back... this time as a permanent restaurant cum event venue in Bangsar.
According to one of the founders, Aida Azwar, “Fancy Breakfast Club 3.0 is still about building a food and dining experience, a mixture of the culinary and the creative. Basically it’s a more polished version of its earlier incarnations.”
Fancy Breakfast Club started as a food and styling blog back in 2011 (version 1.0) before transforming into an underground dining experience based in a residential area from 2014 to early 2015 (version 2.0).
“We are a crossover between a concept restaurant, an event venue, a catering and food styling outfit... and anything that is crazy and exciting!” adds Aida.
Setting up shop in a fixed location seems to be natural progression for the Fancy Breakfast Club team, which also includes Aida’s husband Edan Hasan and beverage specialist Faris Chen. The trio had put the underground dining aspect of Fancy Breakfast Club on a brief hiatus since early 2015 as they focused on catering and events.
“We received a lot of enquiries on when we will be back,” says Aida. “Of course we knew back then it was only a break for us to plan something concrete. While we are now doing breakfast and brunch again, we will still continue our catering efforts. We will focus on culinary tailoring, styling, pop-ups and random guerilla-styled dining.”
The magic is truly in experiencing Fancy Breakfast Club for yourself. Table arrangements – anything from Japanese-inspired bonsai and sweet fragrant Silver Dollar Eucalyptus to incorporating banana leaves in the décor – are lovingly crafted. Dishes invoke a sense of whimsy and childlike glee. No wonder diners keep coming back for more.
So what can loyal Fancy Breakfast Club fans expect from Version 3.0? One thing that will return are the theme-based menus; long-time followers will remember their imaginative renditions of movies like V for Vendetta and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
“We love what we did during Fancy Breakfast Club 2.0, so we still want to keep the whole aesthetic while injecting a few new things into Version 3.0. We still host our usual brunch on weekend and the themes will change every two months. We get bored easily so we need to keep things exciting,” says Aida.
Fancy Breakfast Club 3.0 will roll out their thematic dining starting next month. For fans of Maurice Sendak and Spike Jonze, the theme for January/February 2016 will be Where the Wild Things Are, inspired by the Sendak’s book and Jonze’s film of the same title.
