KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 — A suspicious package found in the toilet of an Air France Flight 463 from Mauritius to Paris with 473 people on board earlier today have been confirmed by Kenyan officials to contain explosives, The Independent reported.

According to the British daily, two passengers aboard the flight that diverted to Mombasa, Kenya have been detained for questioning by the African country’s security officials.

No one has claimed responsibility for the bomb as yet, the paper added.

Kenya’s Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery was earlier reported by international newswire Reuters as telling reporters at the airport that an undisclosed number of passengers were being questioned about the planted device.

“We are in touch with Mauritius to know how security screening of passengers was done. A few passengers are being interrogated,” Nkaissery was quoted saying.

The 459 passengers and 14 crew were evacuated from the plane without incident after the Boeing 777 made an emergency landing at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa at 12.37am Sunday local time and have been put up at hotels nearby.

According to The Independent, the bomb was removed from the plane by the Kenyan navy to be detonated in an undisclosed location away from the airport.

Kenya’s Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet posted the government’s statement on his Twitter account @JBoinnet earlier today.

“Bomb experts from the Navy and DCI have retrieved the device and are determining whether the components contained explosives,” the statement read, with the DCI initials referring to Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Reuters reported Air France saying in a statement that the airline is working to reroute its passengers and would be sending another plane to Mombasa to fly them out to Paris later the same day.

In an update, The Independent reported that a statement posted by Kenya Airports Authority on its Facebook page had been edited, omitting mention of any bomb.

“We confirm of an emergency landing by Air France’s flight from Mauritius at Moi Int’l Airport this morning after reports of a suspicious object was found on board.

“The object has successfully been retrieved from the Paris bound flight. Scheduled flights to Mombasa were disrupted this morning due to the incident.

“Normal airport operations have resumed at Moi International Airport. Investigations are underway by the National Security Agents on the ground and Air France,” the edited statement read.

According to The Independent, the airport authority had earlier posted a statement headlined “Kenyan Security foil a bombing attempt on Air France”, which reportedly said: “Kenyan bomb experts discover a bomb inside Air France at Moi International Airport, Mombasa”.
