CHENNAI, June 6 — A total of 54 female workers fell unconscious and were hospitalised yesterday after an ammonia gas pipeline leak in a fishing factory in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

According to NDTV, the accident took place when a pipeline burst and poisonous gas was inhaled by the workers, causing them to faint.

Inhalation of ammonia, depending on the concentration, can cause severe irritation of the nose and throat, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, resulting in respiratory distress or failure.

According to the Indian Express, an investigation on the accident is now being conducted by a factories inspector and by fire service officials. No arrest has been made but action will be taken following the investigation.
