TOKYO, Jan 22 — In a departure from the wearable norm of health and fitness tracking, Japan-based Fujitsu announced this week the launch of its Fujitsu Vehicle ICT FEELythm, which detects drowsiness using the driver’s pulse and snaps him into action with an alert.

In the interest of keeping drivers comfortable on the long haul, the device is worn around the neck and the sensor attaches to the earlobe, where it monitors the pulse.

Should the device detect a fatigued pulse, it notifies the vehicle fleet manager that the driver is too sleepy to carry on safely.

The device will be available initially in Japan in February and is intended for use in the transportation sector.

The company is currently at work on a device that makes driving safer by applying the driver’s fatigue, stress and tension data to a hazard map.
