PETALING JAYA, May 14 — Singapore’s most famous martial artists Angela and Christian Lee are four days away from the biggest fight in their careers.
The duo will be headlining ONE: Unstoppable Dreams this Friday to complete their childhood mission; to be mixed martial arts (MMA) first ever sibling world champions.
The elder of the two, Angela (21) is already ONE’s atomweight champion while 19-year-old Christian Lee is five rounds away from wrapping the prestigious title around his waist.
“It’s the moment we’ve dreamed off and better yet for us — we could complete the feat on the same night.
“I’m ready to defend my title here in Singapore. It’s like a new beginning and I want to show the world who I am as a fighter.
Angela will be up against a familiar face in Japan’s 35-year-old Mei Yamaguchi and their last battle in 2016 was a contender for the industry’s best fight of 2016.
The duo was supposed to battle it out in November last year, but Angela was involved in a serious car accident.
“It’s been a long time coming. I miss the lights, the fans and the show itself — I live for this,” Angela said at the press conference in Marina Bay Sands earlier today.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a stellar three years with ONE, an 88 per cent finish rate — six submissions and one knockout — and Yamaguchi is the only one she’s failed to see out.
Christian (9-1) will be involved in a rematch too — against the only person who’s managed to defeat him — Australia’s Martin Nguyen.
“All my life, all the hard work has led me to this one moment. I’ve waited long enough for this title shot and I’m ready to give it my all this Friday.
“I have improved since my last match and things will end very differently this time around,” he warned.
Nguyen submitted Christian deep in round one via guillotine choke in Macau in 2016 in a highly anticipated featherweight bout.
He has rebounded since with two knockouts and two submissions to maintain his 100 per cent finishing record.
Nguyen is ONE’s first ever two-division champion — holding the featherweight and lightweight title.
Besides the sibling’s battles in Singapore’s Indoor Stadium on May 18, another title will be on the line when Thailand’s Sam-a Gaiyanghadao and Suriname’s Sergio Wielzen squares off for a muay thai flyweight title.
This will be the second ONE Championship event to be streamed live across its new mobile application available on both Android and iOS platforms.
The new application allows fans around the world to access all ONE Championship live events, exclusive interviews, fighter profiles and a host of other information regarding the organisation.
